Liposuction is one of the most popular surgical procedures in the UK, representing approximately 10% of all cosmetic procedures in 2024, according to the BAAPS Annual Audit.
Liposuction is a surgical procedure which targets and eliminates persistent pockets of fat in areas which may have been resistant to diet and exercise. Also referred to as fat removal surgery, Liposuction sculpts the body, creating more defined contours and harmonious proportions. Popular areas to treat with Liposuction are the buttocks, hips, thighs, abdomen, chin, upper arms, breasts, and knees.
Cadogan Clinic specialises in Liposuction procedures, our founder, Bryan Mayou having introduced fat removal surgery to the UK. We offer a range of Liposuction methods, including traditional Liposuction, Body Jet Liposuction, Laser Liposuction and Vaser Liposuction. Under Mr Mayou's guidance, we've curated a world-class team of surgeons here at our Chelsea clinic, nurturing their expertise in this specialised field.
As a result, we've emerged as the leading destination for Liposuction in London, known for our commitment to delivering excellent results through minimally invasive techniques. The right Liposuction technique for you will depend on your individual concerns and desired results. Our specialist consultant surgeons will discuss the different options available in a one to one bespoke consultation at our award-winning hospital based in sophisticated Chelsea, London.
The credit for introducing Liposuction, also known as 'lipo,' to the UK goes to our founder, world-renowned plastic surgeon Mr. Bryan Mayou, who brought this transformative fat removal surgery to the UK four decades ago. Under Mr Mayou's guidance, we've curated a world-class team of surgeons at our Chelsea clinic, nurturing their expertise in this specialised field.
We are world leaders in the field of Liposuction, and only offer the most up-to-date and effective fat removal techniques. There are many different types of Liposuction. We offer many of these options at the Cadogan Clinic, including:
Traditional Liposuction
Traditional Liposuction involves inserting a specialised tube, called a cannula into the targeted area to suction out fat cells. This method is commonly employed for the removal of small fat deposits, often under local or general anaesthesia, such as in the neck or chin regions.
Traditional Liposuction is known for its high effectiveness and straightforward nature, boasting minimal potential for complications. We also utilise this technique to extract fat for Fat Transfer procedures.
Micro-Liposuction
Micro-Liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure performed under local anaesthesia, requiring minimal downtime. The name "Microlipo" comes from the tiny cannulas, measuring 0.9mm to 2.3mm in thickness, used to extract fat—a significant decrease from the 6-8mm cannulas used in Traditional Liposuction. This technique is particularly effective for areas like the chin, underarms, and jawline.
Smart Liposuction (Laser Liposuction)
Laser-Assisted Liposuction, also known as Smart Lipo, employs lasers to heat and soften fat in the treatment area, facilitating its removal through Liposuction. This process not only contours the treatment area, as is common with Liposuction, but also enhances skin tightening by promoting collagen production. The effects are especially noticeable in areas with thinner skin, such as the inner thighs and arms. Laser-Assisted Liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure that results only in minimal swelling and bruising.
Power-Assisted Liposuction
Power-Assisted Liposuction (PAL) is a mechanically enhanced form of Liposuction that utilises MicroAire and Lipomatic motorised cannulas. These cannulas move in multiple directions, making fat removal easier and faster. Recent studies indicate that PAL effectively removes 30 per cent more fat than manual Liposuction, with less bruising and a shorter recovery time. This technique is ideal for patients with a significant amount of fat to be removed or those who have previously undergone Liposuction.
Water- Assisted Liposuction
Also known as BodyJet Liposuction, Water Liposuction retains the benefits of Traditional Liposuction while excelling at targeting stubborn fat deposits, including those in the breast area. It allows for the efficient removal of larger fat areas and enables simultaneous injection of local anaesthetic fluid during the Liposuction procedure to ease the initial recovery process.
Vaser Liposuction
Vaser Liposuction uses ultrasound energy to break up and liquify fat cells in order to make them easier to extract from the body. VASER is an acronym for vibration amplification of sound energy at resonance. The use of ultrasound energy alongside fat removal can also improve the skin tone of the treatment area, making this a Liposuction technique suited to areas such as the arms, buttocks and thighs where the skin is thinner and prone to stretching.

| 1 in 10 of the surgical procedurs performed at the Cadogan Clinic is Liposuction. Liposuction is the 4th most common cosmetic surgery performed in the UK. |
As part of your consultation, your surgeon will assess and discuss your suitability for Liposuction surgery. You must be over 18 years old to undergo Liposuction.
The factors your surgeon will consider to determine whether you are a suitable candidate for Liposuction include:
Liposuction is a straightforward surgical procedure which carries many benefits for patients.
Your surgeon will discuss the following benefits with you during your consultation:
01.Your Liposuction consultation
Your journey with the Cadogan Clinic begins with up to two consultations conducted by one of our esteemed specialist surgeons at our renowned Chelsea premises. These consultations typically last between 30 and 60 minutes.
During these consultations, your surgeon will engage in a comprehensive discussion about your expectations for your Liposuction procedure. They will provide insights into the procedure itself, including its impact and the expected recovery process. Open and honest communication about your desired surgical outcomes is crucial for achieving the best results, so feel free to ask any questions you may have.
Your surgeon will look into your medical history and perform a thorough physical examination to ensure your suitability for the procedure. If your surgeon determines that you are a suitable candidate for the surgery, you will then have a two-week "cooling off" period to reflect on your decision before proceeding. During this time you can speak with your dedicated surgical patient advisor about available surgical dates and ask any questions about the procedure.
02.Leading up to the procedure
If you decide to move forward with the surgery after the cooling-off period, you'll return to the clinic on the day of the procedure. Your surgeon will provide the step you need to prepare effectively, which will include:
03.On the day
You will be asked to arrive at the clinic an hour ahead of your scheduled surgery time. During this time, a nurse will take your vital signs, including blood pressure, heart rate and temperature, and other relevant measurements. You will also meet with your consultant anaesthetist and surgeon for your final preparations and mark-ups.
The Liposuction procedure itself is a straightforward process conducted under general or local anaesthetic depending on the areas being treated, typically taking one to three hours. Your surgeon will insert a cannula into the targeted area that fat is to be removed from. The cannula is gently moved back and forth to break down fat, and high-pressure suction is then employed to safely extract the loosened fat cells from your body. Thanks to the fine cannula, incision sites are exceptionally small, often measuring just several millimetres, resulting in minimal scarring.
After the procedure, you'll recover in our specialised ambulatory recovery rooms for a duration ranging from two to three hours, depending on the nature of your procedure. Your recovery is closely monitored by our expert nursing team. Once you are ready and our specialists happy with your initial recovery, you will be discharged. You must have a friend or family member collect you from the clinic who can either drive you themselves, or accompany you in a taxi. You will not be allowed to drive yourself following a general anaesthetic.
04.Liposuction recovery and aftercare
During your recovery, you will have access to our on-call nursing team 24-hours a day. They are available to address any post-operative questions or concerns you may have, to ensure your comfort throughout your recovery.
Recovery following Liposuction is generally quick, with any residual discomfort usually subsiding within a few days. We advise complete rest for 5-7 days, as well as closely following your surgeon’s instructions about wearing any required compression garments. These garments support the healing process, enhance comfort, and aid the even distribution of remaining fat cells in the treated area. We recommend taking at least one week off work, although this may be longer if you have a job involving manual labour. Additionally, we advise avoiding exposure to UV light for at least four weeks to protect your incisions and reduce visible scarring.
One week after your procedure, you will have an appointment with our specialist nurses to assess your Liposuction incisions and remove any sutures if they were required. Our nurses will talk you through your recovery and aftercare going forward, including taking care of your dressings and ensure the best possible healing.
At the six-week mark, we'll schedule a post-procedure check-up with your surgeon to ensure your recovery is progressing as anticipated, discuss your results and address any remaining questions or concerns. You have access to our specialist nurses for 2 years following your Liposuction procedure, and can contact your patient advisor at any time.
